Alana Ladson – A Visionary of Joy and Authenticity

Our featured artist this August is the vibrant Alana Ladson, a creative powerhouse whose artistry encompasses illustration, modeling, teaching, and a profound commitment to fostering positivity and representation for BIPOC communities. In our virtual conversation with Alana, her infectious energy and captivating stories painted a portrait of a multifaceted artist driven not only by her purpose and authenticity but also by an unwavering dedication to uplifting others—a truly inspiring commitment.

Alana's artistic journey began from a deeply personal space. Growing up, she noticed a significant absence of relatable representation in the books she read and the shows she watched. Seeking reflections of herself that celebrated strength, magic, and color, she decided to fill the gap herself. "I wanted to see Black girls and women of color riding dragons, slaying demons, doing incredible things. If I could imagine it, why not create it myself?" Alana explained. This empowering realization set her on a creative path that has flourished beautifully over the years.

"That moment is why I do what I do."

One of Alana's significant early influences was the character Suzy Carmichael from the beloved 90s cartoon "Rugrats." Seeing Suzy—a bright, inventive Black girl—left a lasting impression, reinforcing Alana's desire for more characters who mirrored her own experiences and dreams. Fueled by this inspiration, Alana began crafting pieces that embody joy, strength, and vibrant celebration of identity. Teaching also plays a pivotal role in Alana's artistic journey. She excels in educational settings, working with students of various ages and instilling in them the belief that they can achieve anything. Her interactions with young minds have produced heartwarming moments, from students excitedly recognizing themselves in her art to genuine expressions of joy and appreciation that affirm her mission. These experiences continually reinforce her commitment to representation and positivity, inspiring hope and a brighter future in those she touches. Her Etsy shop, which began modestly with prints made from pens, glitter, and markers, quickly blossomed, reflecting Alana's unique vision and resonating deeply with her audience. "Every sale, every piece that finds its way into someone's home—it's an affirmation," Alana shared, recounting the joy of receiving messages and photos from customers who see themselves or their loved ones in her creations. This connection and the appreciation her art brings to her audience are a testament to the value of her work and its impact on others. "That moment is why I do what I do."

Alongside illustration and teaching, Alana's foray into modeling has opened another dimension of her creative expression. Her partnership with equalshuman began from a space of vulnerability, as she stepped into modeling after a period of uncertainty. "Divine intervention nudged me," she remarked, recalling her initial hesitation before embracing the opportunity. Today, Alana's modeling is not just about aesthetics—it's about conveying strength, peace, and the beauty of authentic self-expression.

Currently, Alana is preparing for an exciting exhibition at the University of Connecticut, showcasing her work in communal spaces where art can become a vibrant part of daily life. She's also curating pieces for an upcoming office installation, highlighting local New Haven artists. However, beyond specific projects, Alana strives to continually evolve her artistic voice, exploring deeper messages within herself through personal creative sessions. When asked about her legacy, Alana thoughtfully responded, "I want my students and anyone impacted by my work to feel that anything is possible. I want them to understand that authenticity is powerful, and by being true to themselves, they can positively impact the world."

Alana Ladson's journey exemplifies the transformative power of authenticity, creativity, and community. Her vibrant illustrations, compassionate teaching, and inspiring modeling work create ripples of positivity, representation, and empowerment. equalshuman is proud to spotlight Alana as our featured artist this August, celebrating a voice that continues to uplift, encourage, and illuminate.
